Monsoon Safety Tips for Contractors on the Road

Monsoon season in the Southwest brings fast-moving dust storms, sudden downpours, and dangerous lightning—conditions that can quickly derail HVAC work. Safety and preparation are key.
Whether you're installing rooftop units or delivering custom ductwork, here's how to protect your crew, materials, and schedule during monsoon conditions:
- Track the Forecast: Use weather apps like MyRadar or NOAA alerts to monitor storm activity in real time. Consider rescheduling crane lifts or rooftop work if wind or lightning is likely.
- Secure Loose Materials: Flat sheets, duct fittings, curb adapters, and insulation can go airborne in high winds. Tie everything down—even if you're just stepping away for a few minutes.
- Protect Equipment in Transit: Use straps, tarps, and load nets when transporting curbs or fabricated duct. High-profile items like goosenecks and elbows can act like sails during sudden gusts.
- Cover Open Penetrations: Always carry plastic sheeting and waterproof tape. Cover curb openings, duct risers, and mechanical openings at the end of the day or when storms are near to prevent costly water intrusion.
- Dust Storm Driving: If you're hauling to a site and visibility drops, pull completely off the road. Turn off your lights and keep your foot off the brake to avoid being rear-ended by others following your taillights.
- Lightning Safety on Roofs: No one should be on ladders or rooftops during a thunderstorm. Get inside the building or wait it out in a vehicle with the windows up.
- Keep Jobsite Communication Open: Let your crew know who to call if weather forces a delay. Notify your vendors (like us) early-we can work with you to reschedule deliveries or adjust staging.
- Maintain Equipment Readiness: Ensure tools and generators are stored off the ground and protected from water. Wet equipment isn't just inconvenient-it’s dangerous.
Storms can slow you down, but they don’t have to stop your job. At Empire, we’ve been through this before. If you need help modifying deliveries, protecting your product, or building around the weather, give us a call-we’re here to support your project, rain or shine.
